This is an entry for a national design competition conducted by the PCATP (Pakistan Institute of Architect & Town Planners).
A complex of theatres, teaching institutions, archives, catering facilities, offices, residences, and workshops etc. catering to up to 3,000 visitors in addition to the resident population of scholars, administrative and maintenance staff and other workers. We have conceived the Centre as an urban microcosm, a location for human intercourse and activities rather than a display of monumental architecture.
Derived from the traditional urban morphology based on pedestrian circulation, integrated land use, high density, low rise and low-tech construction. Given the large volume of built spaces to be provided within the limitations of the site and the building regulations, the conception of the centre as a collection of so many discrete blocks or individual buildings, each in their respective spatial domain, was simply not an option. The centre is conceived as a single building mass, punctured vertically by courtyards to provide light and ventilation, and horizontally to provide access corridors, verandas and streets.
Exterior walls are dressed in ‘Taxila stone’; interior walls are generally plastered with lime and gypsum. Walkways & veranda floors are finished in rough cut stone flags, whereas interior floors are in polished stone.
